Halibut heaven!!!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Rosguill’s first ever Halibut. 32 inches long weighing 11.5 pounds. Caught by Dutch angler, Bert Uithol.
So nice, I have shown both sides of the marvelous fish which I thought was a small Tope by the way it fought. Took mackeral baited Hok-Kai (what else!)

Too busy unhooking to fish for Mackeral!!!

Too busy unhooking to fish for Mackeral!!!

First fishing day of 2010 saw the Rosguill head out to the wreck of the Audacious – reasonable numbers of Mackeral on the way which is nice for this time of year. The Audacious did not fish so well, but after a few drifts the answer became obvious – there was a Porbeagle hunting the Pollack. A shift another 5 miles out to the Empire Heritage produced lots of Pollack to about 7/8 pounds and not too many Coalfish.

Season closing down – fishing still good

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

Mackeral are now patchy, wrecks good for Pollack & Ling, Limeburner & sand fishing reasonably well.  Sharks are all but gone.2-thornbacks2

Inconsistent

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Fishing has been inconsistent lately – some really nice fishing at times and at other times very poor. Blue Sharks really very poor compared to previous years. Porbeagles now light on the ground. Settled weather forecast – perhaps fishing will improve.

Porbeagles

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Good numbers of Porbeagle Sharks. Some Blue Sharks but not as many as past couple years. General fishing, sand and Pollack fishing not so good at this time.

End August

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Fishing as expected. However Blue Sharks are definetly not in same numbers as last few years – water temperature stopped rising around start august and is still only 15 degrees as opposed to an expected 16 – to 16.5 degrees. Lots of porbeagles. Pollack still very scarce on inshore reefs – spoke to a guy who had fished off west Donegal and had lots of Pollack there and plenty of Pipefish present. Sand normal.

Porbeagles

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

The Rosguill has been taking divers out recently. Reports from other boats are of reasonable catches of Porbeagle Sharks in the 50 -100 pound range. Blues are not as good as would be expected for mid – august, but water temperature seems to have stuck at 15 degrees. Back fishing shortly & hope to have some nice photos to show.

Turbot, Brill & Blues

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

A whole day on the Turbot & Brill grounds produced just 5 good sized Flatfish. Wrecks not so good. Another Downings charter boat had a day on Blue Sharks – 2 August – landed a large Blue Shark of around 100 pounds. Water temp now 15 degrees

First ever Bull Huss & second Common Skate of 2009

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Rosguill’s first ever Bull Huss and on the same day the second Common Skate of 2009. 85 inches long and 67 inches wingspan – estimated weight of 193 pounds. Both caught along with 12 Tope runs on a new mark………..”I will return”!
However, sand fishing has dis-improved and Pollack on the inshore reefs remains poor.

End July

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Fishing continues apace. Good fishing everywhere but still no great days on inshore Pollack. Tried for Blue Sharks to no avail – they cannot be far away as water temp is now up to 15 degrees.plaicetubpollack src=”https://rosguill.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/ling.jpg” alt=”ling” title=”ling” width=”550″ height=”536″ class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-291″ /
